4: STATE OF CHARGE OF BATTERIES
The amount of energy stored in a battery at any time is called the “State of Charge”.
The “State of Charge” can be approximately estimated by measuring the voltage
across the battery terminals when battery is being discharged under know conditions
of current and temperature and is the only way to measure the State of Charge of
sealed batteries.
The State of Charge of lead-acid batteries that are not sealed can also be
determined by measuring the specific gravity of the electrolyte (the acid and water
mixture in the battery) and the temperature of the battery. This is the most practical
way to measure the state of charge of batteries, which are not sealed.
The following procedure explains how to do this:
1.
Top up the battery with clean distilled water to the maximum level indicated on
the battery.
2.
Leave the battery for one hour to allow the acid and water to mix.
