Demodulate
To recover the information originally impressed on the radio wave.
Downconverter
A device which converts microwave frequencies to UHF frequencies for use in
DTC receivers.
E
Definition
Elementary Stream (ES)
These streams contain only one MPEG video or audio channel.
Elementary streams are required if you intend to use
Milestone
or any player
that cannot operate with transport streams.
Encoder
A processor in a transmitter which converts video or audio to compressed
digital signals.
F
Definition
FEC
Forward Error Correction is a system of error control for data transmission,
whereby the sender adds redundant data to its messages. This allows the
receiver to detect and correct errors without the need to ask the sender for
additional data.
Firmware
Software which is installed directly on a device and is intended specifically
for that device and is used to control it.
FPGA
A Field-Programmable Gate Array is an integrated circuit which can be
programmed to perform complex logic functions. The software can be
upgraded in the field, hence, field-programmable.
Frequency
The rate at which a process repeats itself. In radio communications, the
frequency of electromagnetic waves is expressed in Hertz (Hz).
Electromagnetic waves also have a property called wavelength, which is
inversely proportional to the frequency.
G
Definition
Gain
An increase in signal strength, typically by an amplifier.
GHz
One gigahertz is equal to 1,000,000,000Hz or 1,000MHz.
GUI
A Graphical User Interface allows users to interact with an electronic device.

Definition
IP address
An Internet Protocol address is a unique numeric ID for a device within a
network.
Impedance
The total opposition offered by a circuit or component to the flow of
alternating current.
