(2) Install steering column into opening in lower
instrument panel.
(3) Align slots in mounting brackets on steering
column with studs in instrument panel. Loosely
attach column to instrument panel lower mounting
studs using two lower mounting nuts.
(4) Connect wiring harness electrical connectors to
multi-function switch, windshield wiper switch, and
ignition switch (Fig. 4).
(5) Connect wiring harness electrical connector to
clockspring (Fig. 3).
(6) Lift column into mounting position on the
instrument panel and install two upper mounting
nuts. Tighten all four (upper and lower) mounting
nuts to 17 N·m (150 in. lbs.) torque.
(7) Verify front wheels of vehicle are in
STRAIGHT-AHEAD position.
(8) If not already positioned, position steering col-
umn shaft in correct alignment with splines in inter-
mediate shaft extension coupling. To do this, turn the
steering wheel end of the shaft until the missing
spline area on that end of the shaft faces straight up.
(9) Slide intermediate shaft extension coupling
onto steering column shaft (Fig. 2). Install coupling
pinch bolt and tighten to 49 N·m (36 ft. lbs.) torque.
(10) Install upper shroud onto steering column
(Fig. 2).
(11) Install lower shroud onto steering column
(Fig. 2). Snap lower shroud to upper, then install and
tighten two screws securing shrouds to column.
CAUTION: If there is any question as to whether the
clockspring is in the centered position of travel, the
clockspring needs to be recentered before installing
the steering wheel. If the clockspring is not cen-
tered, it may be overextended, causing the clock-
spring to become inoperative.
(12) If necessary, recenter clockspring. To center
clockspring, perform following:
(a) Using your fingers, rotate the clockspring
rotor in the CLOCKWISE DIRECTION to the end
of travel. Do not apply excessive torque.
(b) From the end of travel, rotate the rotor two
full turns and an additional one half turn in the
COUNTERCLOCKWISE DIRECTION. (The wires
should end up toward the top of the clockspring).
CAUTION: Do not install steering wheel onto col-
umn shaft by driving (forcing) it into place.
(13) Feed clockspring wiring leads through hole in
steering wheel. Align steering wheel’s wide mounting
spline with steering column shaft missing spline area
and push wheel onto shaft. Make sure clockspring
lines up with back of steering wheel and does not
bind.
(14) Install steering wheel retaining bolt and
tighten it until wheel is fully installed on shaft.
Tighten steering wheel retaining bolt to 54 N·m (40
ft. lbs.) torque.
(15) Place driver airbag near clockspring wiring
and connect horn switch wiring connector (Fig. 1).
(16) Connect squib wires (match colors of connec-
tor ends) to driver airbag (Fig. 1). Make airbag con-
nection by pressing straight in on connectors. The
connector must be fully seated. Feel for positive snap
to assure positive connection.
(17) Attach squib wiring routing clips to steering
wheel (Fig. 1).
(18) Place driver airbag into position and install
three mounting screws. Tighten mounting screws to
12 N·m (105 in. lbs.) torque.
(19) Install lower instrument panel steering col-
umn cover. (Refer to 23 - BODY/INSTRUMENT PAN-
EL/STEERING
COLUMN OPENING COVER -
INSTALLATION)
NOTE: When reconnecting the battery on a vehicle
that has had the driver airbag removed, the follow-
ing procedure should be used.
(20) Reconnect ground cable to negative post of
battery in following manor:
(a) Connect scan tool (DRBIII
t
) to data link
diagnostic connector located below steering column.
(b) Turn ignition key to ON position. Exit vehi-
cle with scan tool leaving scan tool harness
plugged in.
(c) Ensuring that there are no occupants in vehi-
cle, connect ground (-) cable to negative post of bat-
tery.
(d) Using scan tool, read and record any fault
codes. Refer to Appropriate Diagnostic Information
if any faults are found.
(e) Erase any stored faults if there are no active
fault codes. If problem exists, fault code will not
erase.
(f) Reach around behind steering wheel (between
steering wheel and instrument cluster) and turn
ignition key to OFF, then back ON while observing
instrument cluster airbag indicator lamp. It should
go on for six to eight seconds, then go out. This will
indicate that airbag system is functioning nor-
mally. If airbag indicator lamp fails to light, blinks
on and off, or goes on and stays on, there is an air-
bag system malfunction. Refer to Appropriate Diag-
nostic
Information to diagnose a system
malfunction.
(21) Turn key to OFF and remove scan tool from
vehicle.
(22) Test operation of horn, wipers and any other
functions that are steering column operated. If appli-
cable, reset radio and clock.
