Settings in Other Applications
Color managed applications offer some type of setting for choosing an output or
printer profile. This is where you will choose your custom profile as you print. Choice
of Rendering Intent may not be included in the user adjustable items in all
applications. When rendering intent cannot be specified, then the default intent is
typically used. In Datacolor profiles, the Perceptual intent is the default. Please note
that non-color managed applications, ones that do not offer a printer profile choice
when printing, cannot be used directly with ICC printer profiles. If you use such an
application, consider alternative applications that offer color management, at least for
your printing needs. Adobe Photoshop Elements® (Mac and Windows) or ACD
PhotoCanvas® are examples of low cost applications that offer simple color
management.
Advanced Topic: Understanding Color Gamuts & Colorspaces
Color Gamut refers to the range of color a device or colorspace can reach. A red
brighter than any red your printer can print is called an out-of-gamut color, while a
weaker red that can be achieved by that printer is considered to be in-gamut. Your
image will travel through the gamut of a color workingspace, be viewed through the
gamut of a monitor, and printed through the gamut of a particular printer, colorant,
and media combination. All of these can effect the range of available color.
A Colorspace can be the definition of a device’s color gamut, or an artificial color range
that is used in computer applications to simplify color management of files, called a
workingspace. Photoshop 5 was the first application to utilize color workingspaces,
which are tied to universal color values by having a color definition in L*a*b* space,
making RGB color consistent in its meaning.
Source Color Issues
Digital cameras often emulate a colorspace, including its gamut range, to simplify the
process of defining the camera’s color when the images are opened on a computer.
Consumer cameras most often emulate the sRGB colorspace. Professional cameras
