b. Apply a coat of wax to the entire
surface of the yacht. Put rust inhibitor
on all deck hardware and other metal
parts. See your Cruisers Yachts
Dealer for product recommendations.
IMPORTANT
If possible, do not seal cabin or
cockpit tightly. Dry, fresh air will
ventilate these areas preventing
mold and mildew.
19. Cover your yacht with a tarpaulin or
mooring cover. If the yacht is stored
outside, additional supports under the
tarp or cover may be necessary to
prevent pockets that will collect snow or
rain. This can add extra load to the hull
and cradle and also stress the cover,
possibly tearing it.
Fitting Out After Storage
It is necessary to check your yacht
thoroughly for damage after an extended
storage period. Look for items such as
cracks or breaks due to freezing, fiberglass
stress cracks in hull or deck and fuel or
water leaks in seals or seams. The following
steps will assist you in getting your yacht
back into the water.
1. If anti-fouling paint and wax was not
applied before your yacht was stored,
apply them now.
2. Inspect all through-hull fittings, shafts
and rudder or drive system seals for
tightness and possible leakage. Do not
overtighten.
3. Inspect the entire fuel system for leaks
or deterioration. Replace parts as
necessary.
4. Open and close all seacocks to check
operation. Install all drain plugs in
strainers and seacocks.
5. Check all hoses and fittings for cracking,
splitting or deterioration. Replace
defective parts immediately.
6. Batteries:
a. Make sure battery or batteries are
fully charged and the electrolyte level
is approximately 1/2 inch (12 mm)
above the internal plates.
b. Clean battery posts and cables. Use
a solution of baking soda and water
to clean battery cases.
c. Install batteries and connect battery
cables. Apply a small amount of
grease or petroleum jelly to cover the
posts and cable clamps.
d. Turn master battery switch to the ON
position.
7. Install drain plugs in bottom of all
mufflers. Inspect exhaust system from
engine to hull outlet. Make sure hoses,
mufflers, fittings and clamps are water
and exhaust tight.
8. Connect all hoses that were
disconnected for winter storage.
9. Fresh water System:
a. Close all faucets onboard.
b. Fill fresh water tank with
approximately halfway with pure
drinking water. Turn fresh water
pump circuit breaker to the ON
position.
c. Open hot and cold faucets in galley
slightly to allow air to escape and fill
water heater. Close the faucets when
a steady flow of water is present.
Bleed air from all remaining faucets.
d. The pump will run until operating
pressure is reached and turn off.
Continue to fill fresh water tank to its
capacity.
10. Refer to engine owner’s manual for
procedures to put engine and drive
system into service after an extended
storage.
11. Refer to generator owner’s manual for
procedures to put generator back into
service after an extended storage.
12. Put miscellaneous equipment such as
mattresses, cushions, curtains and life
preservers onboard.
13. Make sure all seacocks are closed and
launch yacht.
