e. Operating the Portaspec from a dedicated voltage supply outlet would aid in
the final accuracy of the results.
5.3. Operators Tutorial
At this point, you should have the Portaspec completely set up with the correct power
to the unit, including a third wire ground.
The succeeding tutorial should be followed to familiarize operators with the basic
manual functions of the Portaspec. Through this procedure, you will confirm that the
Portaspec is operating at the same level as when it went through final quality control.
Refer to the Portaspec X Series software instructions for a detailed description of the
software operational features.
5.3.1. Connecting for the first time.
a. Turn on power using the switch on the
Power Inlet Module, as seen on Image
3-4 in Section 3.4. You should hear a
single beep and a flicker from the x-ray
on light, indicating a proper power up and
x-ray lamp check. Now the computer can
be powered on.
b. Press the power button on the touch-
screen computer and wait for Windows®
to boot up completely.
c. As with all electronic components, it is
advisable to allow a stabilizing period for
warm-up before any serious analysis is
performed. A period of 30 minutes,
depending on ambient temperature,
should be sufficient after initial power-up of a cold instrument.
d. Now look for the Portaspec Control Program icon, Image 5-2 , on the touch
screen computer and double click it.
e. If all is well, on the main menu, you
will notice the “Portaspec Status” is
“Connected".
f.
If you get the “Portaspec did not
respond.” message, select the “No”
button to exit the program.
Disconnect, then reconnect the
USB cable, while both Portaspec and computer are on. Run the program
again.
g.
If you continue to get the “Portaspec did not respond.” Message, respond
“Yes” to the “Portaspec did not respond.” dialog and select “Setup” from the
main menu.
h.
On the “Communications” tab, confirm that a serial port is selected for use
and the “Auto-connect when program starts” box is checked. You can refer
to the Portaspec Software Instructions, “Getting Started” in Page 9, for
detailed connection instructions. The Portaspec Software Instructions
shortcut is located on the computer desktop.
