53 AND 71 SERIES DIESEL ENGINES
IMPORTANT: When em ergency stop has been
r e le a se d , the stop knob in the cab must be pushed
a ll the way down, and the spring loaded latch must
be manually r e - s e t .
1. When em ergency stop linkage req u ires ad­
justm ent rem ove air clean er h o ses from both air
horns (fig. 6).
2. L oosen adjusting rod lock nuts, and turn
adjusting rod so both em ergency stop doors c lo se
at the sam e tim e. Tighten lock nuts.
NOTE: Check em ergency stop doors by putting
hand in each air horn.
3. Connect a ir clean er h o ses to a ir horns.
DIESEL FUEL REQUIREMENTS
D istilla tio n range, cetane number, and sulphur
content are three of the m ost important p rop er­
tie s in the se le c tio n of D ie se l fu els for optimum
com bustion and minimum engine w ear.
Engine speed, load and atm ospheric te m p er­
ature influence the se le c tio n of the fuel with r e ­
sp ect to distillation range and cetane number. The
sulphur content of the fuel m ust be a s low a s p o s­
sib le to avoid e x c e s s iv e deposit form ation, co rro ­
sion , and prem ature w ear.

The sa tisfa cto ry perform ance of a d ie se l engine
depends on sufficiently high com p ression p r e ssu r e
and the injection of the proper amount of fuel at the
right tim e.
It is important that extrem e care be e x ercised
in the handling and storage of d ie se l fuel o il, as
absolute c lea n lin ess is e sse n tia l to satisfactory
engine operation.
