Crossing

In crossing situations, the boat to the right from the 12
o’clock to the 4 o’clock position has the right-of-way and
must hold course and speed. The boat without right-of-
way must yield and pass to the stern of the privileged
boat. Boats going up and down a river have the right-of-
way over boats crossing the river.

Aids to Navigation

Navigational aids are designed and placed accordingly to
help you navigate safely on the water. Learn to recognize
the different buoys and day markers. They are the
signposts of the waterways. The United States Aids to
Navigation System (USATONS) is the primary marking
system used on inland water, coastal waters and rivers.
This system is maintained by the USCG.

The following information is based on the USATONS.
For further information, contact the USCG and state
and local marine authorities. Also visit the U.S. Coast
Guard website for buoyage system information (see

“Resources” on page 17

for website).

The USATONS uses buoys, beacons and minor lights as
markers.
