SPECIFIC INFORMATION
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE – LANYARDS
Summary
EN 354:2010 certified lanyards are pieces of personal protection equipment (PPE) designed for use as connecting
elements in a fall arrest system. Some lanyards can also be used as temporary portable anchor devices (EN
795/B:2012 / ANSI/ASSE Z359.1-2007- reference
chart
).
This product is intended for use to protect and prevent against risks of falling from above in industry, in construction
work, in rescue and, more generally, for any application of work at a height.
All the lanyards, even those made of metal cable, are not indestructible and can be cut by sharp tools (i.e. chain-saw,
etc.); therefore always use a backup line during cutting activities.
Various models and standard versions are available, shown in
Tab. A
. Other special combinations of connectors and
special lengths are available and the relative data are shown on the product marking.
Use
Fall Factor is a rating used to evaluate the danger of specific scenarios when working at heights (
fig.1
) is calculated
using the following equation:
Fall Factor = Height of Fall / Length of Lanyard.
In situations where the Fall Factor will be 0 (e.g. the worker is positioned under the anchor point on a tensioned
lanyard), positioning equipment is adequate.
Fall arrest equipment must be used for other situations where the Fall Factor is greater than 1 or more freedom of
movement is required. For connection to the ventral point of a sit harness EN 813 see
fig.4
. For connection to an
energy absorber EN 355 and to the attachment point of a fall arrest harness, see
fig.5
. Do not connect to the side
point of a work positioning belt (
fig.6
). Do not position the two straps of the 203008 lanyard so that they form an
angle under load greater than 120° (
fig.7
). In fall arrest situations, an EN 354 certified lanyard must be used with an
EN 355 certified shock absorber and EN 362 certified connectors (EN 354 certified lanyards must not be used alone
as fall arresters). In this case, the maximum length of the system (aconnectors) must not exceed
2 meters and must be connected to a full-strength attachment point (A) of an EN 361 certified fall arrest harness.
When there is a possibility of a fall, ensure the sling/webbing remains tight, avoid any slack. Refer to the absorber
and harness use manual to verify correct connection. The anchor point must be located above the work area and
must be in compliance with the EN795 standard and/or known to have a resistance of 12 kN (metal anchors) or 18
kN (fabric anchors).
The static strength is (see
chart
), as shown in
fig.8
. Limit the amount of slack during the use in order to reduce
the possibility of fall. Do not tie knots in the sling/webbing. Should the sling/webbing come into contact with sharp
edges, take care to avoid damage to the sling/webbing. Certified rescue equipment and trained rescue workers are
necessary for intervention in case of a fall.
Installation instructions for EN 795/B lanyards
Lanyards certified as portable anchor devices (EN 795/B) must be attached to structures for which the strength
has been verified and without sharp edges or abrasive surfaces that could damage lanyards and decrease their
strength. To create an anchor point, fasten the lanyard as specified in
fig.2
. Portable anchor devices must be loaded
by one person only. Do not stay above the anchor point: risk of failure/injuries in case of fall. Take measures to avoid
pendulum. If used in a fall arrest system, the system must limit the peak force below 6 kN. The maximum load that
could be transmitted in service from the anchor device is 9 kN. This force is transmitted to the structure, which must
be verified in terms of minimum strength (>12 kN) and of force direction. The deflection used as anchor may get to
20% of its length. It is recommended to mark the device with the date of last inspection. Do not use the product for
lifting equipment.
