PARKING BRAKE AND
P (PARK) MECHANISM
CHECK
CAUTION
Before beginning this
procedure, make sure the area
around the vehicle is clear.
While performing this
inspection, the vehicle could
move suddenly. You or others
could be injured and objects
could be damaged.
Be ready to apply the regular
brake immediately if the
vehicle begins to move.
Park the vehicle on a steep grade
with the vehicle facing downhill.
Set the parking brake and apply
the regular brake pedal.
See "Parking Brake" in Section 3 for
information on how to properly
set and release the parking brake.
• To check the strength of the
parking brake:
With the engine running and
the transmission in
N
(Neutral),
slowly remove your foot from
the regular brake pedal until
the vehicle is held only by the
parking brake.
If the vehicle begins to move,
your vehicle needs service. See
your dealer.
• To check the strength of the
P
(Park) mechanism:
With the engine running, shift
to
P
(Park). Release the parking
brake and slowly remove your
foot from the regular brake
pedal until the vehicle is held
only by the park mechanism.
If the vehicle begins to move,
your vehicle needs service. See
your dealer.
