1.4.6 IP Address Auto-Configuration
If the TRBMIM-T does not have an IP address when it is powered up, it
automatically transmits up to seven BootP requests for an IP address from
any BootP server on the network that can provide it. Causative conditions
include:
•
Initial power up
•
No IP address (i.e., 0.0.0.0)
•
The IP address has been cleared from NVRAM before the next reboot
or power up
The BootP server must be accessible to the TRBMIM-T on the network,
and both the TRBMIM-T IP address and the TRBMIM-T MAC address
(of the port interfacing with the BootP server) must be entered in the
server’s remote-management BootP application. When the TRBMIM-T
receives the BootP response, its Boot PROM saves the IP address to the
Boot PROM portion of NVRAM. The flash image is then able to read the
IP address and write it to the flash image portion of NVRAM.
See the TRBMIM/TRBMIM-T Local Management User’s Guide for
information on specifying IP addresses and Locally Administered MAC
addresses in the System Level application.
1.5 SOURCE-ROUTE BRIDGING OVERVIEW
Source-route (SR) bridging requires that the source, or transmitting,
station specifies in its data packet the route to the destination station on
another ring. The source station learns the route to the destination station
by first transmitting an explorer frame (All-Routes Explorer or
Single-Route Explorer) that traverses the bridged internetwork until it
locates the destination station. Each bridge that the explorer frame passes
through writes information about its identity to the Routing Information
(RI) field included within the explorer frame. This information includes
the identification number assigned to the bridge and the identification
number assigned to each ring connected to each of the bridge’s ports.
The explorer frame also tallies the number of bridges, or hops, it has to
traverse on the discovery route. A bridge discards an explorer frame that
has exceeded the hop-count limit (typically seven) specified for the SR
bridged internetwork. A hop count limit is imposed to control
explorer-frame traffic on the internetwork.
