2.10 The On-Board Signal Generator
Part of the acquisition cirtuitry includes an on-board free running signal generator.
This signal can be steered to the GPOUTs and/or to the camera CCs. This provides an
additional tool for synchronization, triggering and camera control. The output of this
generator is programmable. Figure 2-13 shows a block diagram of the generator.
The clock driving the generator is derived from the on-board clock. The frequency is
controlled by CFREQ in CON0. The selected clock frequency can be optionally scaled
down by 8192, depending on the SCALE_BY8K bit in CON18. The rate of the signal
generator is set by FREE_RUN_RATE in CON17. The CLOCK_IN will be divided by the
number programmed in FREE_RUN_RATE .
Register FREE_RUN_HI in CON17 defines the amount of CLOCK_INs that the signal
will be high in a period. The purpose of this register is to be able to control the duty
cycle (pulse width) of the signal generator independent of the frequency.
The output of the generator can be optionally inverted by the SIG_GEN_POL bit in
CON18.
Let’s look at an example. Assume we want to generate a signal 35 milliseconds wide
at a rate of 2Hz. You would then program the signal generator as follows.
Set CFREQ = 5. This will program the clock generator to 30Mhz.
Set SCALE_BY8K = 1. This will divide the 30Mhz by 8K, yielding a CLOCK_IN of
3662.1Hz.
Set FREE_RUN_RATE = 1831 (3662/2). This will produce the 2Hz rate.
Set FREE_RUN_HI = 128 ( 3662.1x0.035 = 128.1 ). This will produce a pulse 0.035
seconds wide.
Set SIG_GEN_POL = 0. The output needed is active high.
