the large "O" ring that seals the two parts of the pump casing that clamp together.
Disassembly of Submersible Pump-motor Assembly:
The motor has four studs onto which the
pump is held with four nuts and washers. Undo these 1/2" hex nuts with a box end wrench. The pump
can then be pulled off the motor.
Motor Evaluation:
The 1.5 HP, 50 Hertz, 220 Volt motor is made by Franklin Electric of Bluffton,
Indiana, USA. Information and data on this motor is from the manufacturer.
The motor condition is determined by its winding resistances, insulation resistance, shaft height, shaft
free play, and of course the ability of the shaft to turn.
Insulation: The insulation resistance is the resistance between any of the motor leads and ground. A
new pump will have 20 meg-ohm or more of insulation resistance. A used motor should have at least
10 meg-ohm or more resistance.
Winding Resistances: The main winding is between the black and yellow leads. It should have a
resistance of 5.9 to 7.2 ohms. The start winding is between the red and yellow leads. It should have a
resistance of 6.2 to 12 ohms.
Shaft Height: The height of the motor shaft relative to the boss on the motor end should be between
1.498" and 1.508". Too low a height indicates a worn out thrust bearing.
Free Play: The shaft free play should be no less than 0.010 inches and no greater than 0.045 inches.
Too much free play indicates a worn out thrust bearing.
Rotation: The shaft may be initially stuck, but should rotate easily after several turns.
Motor Replacement:
The motor manufacturer recommends that the motor lead assembly not be
reused on a new motor due to the possibility of inadequate sealing from either a permanent set in the
rubber, or from damage that could occur during removal. Nevertheless, if the lead is carefully removed
and examination shows the rubber to still be pliable, the motor lead can be reused.
The motor lead is held on by a jam nut. Loosen the jam nut fully and then grab the assembly gently
with soft jaw pliers and pull straight out.
When reinstalling the motor lead or installing a new one, the jam nut should be torqued to 15-20 ft-lbs.
(2.1 to 2.8 kg-m).
Use a thin layer of silicone grease on the motor shaft splines before assembling the motor to the pump.
The shaft may have to be rotated slightly for alignment.
Pump Repair
: Pumps can be replaced as a whole and pumps can be repaired by authorized Sta-Rite
dealers and perhaps others involved with well pump service and supply.
Assembly of the Pump Housing: Clean the “O” ring groove and lubricate with silicone grease. The two
sections must be aligned so the pen marks match. Put on the V band clamp and tighten carefully.
Check that the two PVC flanges are aligned right to left and front to back.
