PREFILTER SERVICE
Prefilter pressure drop
. The pressure drop across the twin 20 inch prefilters will increase as the filters
collect sediment and other turbidity. The filters are in parallel with a differential pressure switch factory
adjusted to close when 15 PSID is reached. When this happens, the "Prefilter Pressure Drop" LED will
light. The light will latch on until the system is turned off. A gauge on the front panel also displays the
prefilter pressure drop.
The pressure drop through the filters varies with the changes in the feed flow. During normal operation
the feed flow is the least when no product water is being used. The factory set capillary tubing provides
2.5 to 3 GPM of reject flow to drain at 200 PSI. With no product water being used, the feed flow is the
same 3 GPM as the reject flow. When the product water is all being used or sent to drain, the feed flow
is the sum of the product and reject flows, or about 6 GPM at rated temperature.
The greatest feed flow is during flushing when the green flush valve is open. So for a given filter
element condition, the differential pressure across the prefilters will also be greatest during flushing.
Thus if the system is flushed and the light comes on, turn the system off and on again to reset the
alarm lamp before returning to normal operation.
The filter elements should normally be changed before the prefilter pressure drop LED comes on.
Prefilter Changing Procedure:
Turn off the system. After removing the front cover, turn off the main
shut off valve. Open the filter vent valve. The blue filter sumps screw off counterclockwise looking up.
A plastic wrench is included to loosen the bowls. Note: Use the wrench only for loosening the sumps;
hand tighten only!
The inside of the sump should be rinsed thoroughly when the element is changed. Replace the element
with a 20" long cartridge rated at 5 microns or less. The AWE part number of the element required is
F94B2, which is a 5 micron rated spun polypropylene type.
The prefilter housing is sealed by a Buna N rubber "O" ring. The "O" ring must be seated in its groove
to make the seal. Occasionally the "O" ring should be lubricated with Vaseline
TM
or equivalent
petroleum jelly. The housing should be leak tight with only hand tightening. Do not use a wrench to
tighten the filter! If hand tightening is not sufficient, a new "O" ring may be needed.
FLUSHING
Opening the green handled flush valve increases the reject flow to drain and reduces the pump outlet
pressure. If modules are fouling and loosing flux quickly, periodic flushing of the system can decrease
the rate of fouling. Flush the system when it is out of service for 10 minutes at a time, perhaps weekly.
Set this valve partially open in normal operation to limit recovery if required.
MONITOR ADJUSTMENT
The alarm setting is displayed by moving the slide switch lever on the circuit board from the normal to
the alarm position. The setting can then be adjusted by rotating the slot head in the adjacent
potentiometer.
