WINTER

W A R N I N G
Shut down all sources of power before servicing.
*************************************************************
Special care must be taken when handling the Load Bank during the winter months. Wiring, tubing,
plastics, insulation, and non-ferrous items are more susceptible to damage if flexed, compressed, or
stressed at lower temperatures.
Fan motors are rated to -40
°
C but can be overloaded at these lower temperatures. The air density
will be greater, increasing the motor horsepower draw. Consult factory if fuses blow or overloads
trip. Ensure ice has not built up on fan blades prior to start-up. Light to moderate snow during load
testing will not build up on the equipment. During idle periods, heavy snow will keep gravity
exhaust hatches from opening. The hatches have been designed to keep snow out of the resistor
stack. If snow has a chance to build up on the hatches, it must be manually removed before
operating the Load Bank.
Freeze/thaw cycles are the most detrimental to the Load Bank. This will create several layers of ice
and snow on both the internal components and the gravity exhaust hatches. A visual check must be
performed on the resistors, fan blades, and inside the medium voltage enclosure. Ensure the fan
blades are not locked. If heavy snow and ice have built up on the fan blades, resistors, and exhaust
hatches, a maintenance team must clear all of the snow and ice prior to start-up. Next, visually
inspect inside the medium voltage enclosure. If ice has built up on conductors, insulators, and
components, it must be removed prior to the application of the load. Once all items are clear, verify
fan performance by inspecting exhaust hatches. These should open fully and pivot closed once fans
shut off.
Always energize heaters when temperatures fall below 20ºF (-6ºC).
OVER THE ROAD USE
Salt and road spray as well as site debris/dust can rapidly accumulate on the Load Bank. A visual
inspection of all insulation systems, resistor channels, and load wiring for build-up is to be
conducted prior to operation. If build-up is significant, all components must be manually cleaned
and wiped dry.
