senors EXACTLY AS DESCRIBED. Failure to perform all steps of the standardization procedure
may result in incorrect or erratic operation of the BBR2S.
1. Standardizing the Temperature (RTD)
NOTE: Before beginning temperature standardization, verify that the temperature of the
BBR bath has been set to 0.0 degrees C and allowed to stabilize for at least 1-2 hours . All
temperature settings for the BBR bath are performed using the up/down arrows on the front
panel of the chiller’s temperature controller.
a. Verify that the load frame is in the bath, and that the temperature of the bath is set to 0.0 deg. C.
b. Allow temperature to stabilize for one to two hours after set point is reached.
c. After temperature has stabilized, select MAIN MENU on the BBR software and then select the
STANDARDIZATION button.
d. Select the TEMPERATURE button.
e. You will need a calibrated partial immersion reference thermometer suitable to ASTM 133C. A calibrated PRT
thermometer may also be used. Submerge the thermometer in the BBR bath at the appropriate depth next to the
load frame RTD.
f. Leave the thermometer in place for a minimum of two minutes and note the temperature reading of the bath to
the nearest tenth of a degree (within 0.1⁰ C)
g. Adjust the chiller setpoint temperature if necessary to obtain a bath temperature of 0.0⁰ C.
h. When the calibrated thermometer indicates a bath temperature of 0.0⁰ C, select ZERO in the Standardization
menu, then select NEXT.
i. Change the set point temperature of the BBR bath to a temperature colder than the coldest temperature you
normally test at, or to -36⁰ C. Allow the temperature of the bath to stabilize at the selected temperature for a
minimum of 30 minutes.
j. Note the temperature of the calibrated thermometer, and enter this reading in to the box labeled
TEMPERATURE on the BBR menu screen. Select FINISH to save this value and exit the Temperature
Standardization menu.
k. The BBR Load Frame RTD should now be standardized.
2. Standardizing the Load (Load Cell)
a. Select the “Load” button from the Standardization Screen.
b. With the load frame in the bath, load the non-compliant beam into test position.
c. Using the zero regulator, adjust the load nose so it is slightly above the beam.
d. Press the “Tare” button.
e. Using the zero regulator, gently lower the load nose lightly onto the beam with minimal load (20mN ± 10mN).
