Troubleshooting

Issue 2 April 1996

Description: This problem only occurs with HP OpenView 3.3 on the Sun
SPARC platform. The "xnmevents" process monitors SNMP events and updates
the icon status. This process can crash when you have two or more map files with
different sets of DEFINITY icons on them. When the map is up and OpenView
receives an SNMP trap to update the status of a DEFINITY icon that is not on the
current map, OpenView attempts to bring up a warning pop-up window. At this
point "xnmevents" crashes. No further icon color changes will occur until you
restart "xnmevents".

Action: Try one of the following to avoid this problem.

■

Put all the DEFINITY PBXs in one map file. If you have multiple maps,
make sure that all the DEFINITY PBXs appear in each of the maps.

■

Get patch DFIX1216 from Hewlett Packard. This patch adds a new
X-resource called "xnmevents.warnOnUnknownTrapSource". It tells
OpenView not to put up the warning pop-up window that causes the
crash. To use this resource, add the following line in the ".Xdefaults" of the
login running OpenView:
xnmevents.warnOnUnknownTrapSource:False

Upgrade to OpenView 3.3.1. Then get patch DFIX1312 from Hewlett
Packard. This fixes the problem.

Switch View Messages

The following error messages appear in the message area of the Switch View.

ERROR: Alarms and Errors Refresh failed.

Description: The Alarms and Errors Refresh has failed.

Action: Try the following procedure.

1. Check to see whether the connection between the Proxy Agent and

the PBX is up, and that the Proxy Agent is running and
communicating with the NMS.

2. Make sure that the PBX is in the Proxy Agent’s clients screen.

3. Try the refresh again.

ERROR: Bad response from agent while requesting <data type>.

Description: The application received a bad response from the Proxy
Agent while requesting the specified data.

Action: Try the following procedure.

1. Check to see whether the connection between the Proxy Agent and

the PBX is up, and that the Proxy Agent is running and
communicating with the NMS.

2. Make sure that the PBX is in the Proxy Agent’s clients screen.
