Hardware Overview
The PCIE-7210-1 card is designed for the standard or RMS and MaxCore servers. The PCIE-
7210-1 is an Intel E3-1578L v5 PCI Express card for server based installations in video
broadcasting, gaming, and data server environment.The card has PCIe x4 Gen 3 bus connected
to standard gold finger edge.
The PEX9716 device used in the PCIE-7210-1 card is a 16 lane, 5 port, PCI Express Gen 3 switch
from Broadcom. The PEX9716 provides the ability to share I/O with standard Single Root
Input/Output Virtualization (SR-IOV) or multifunction devices, and to enable multiple hosts to
reside on a single PCIe based network using standard PCIe enumeration – a capability not
previously available on PCIe devices. The hosts communicate through Ethernet-like Direct
Memory Access (DMA), and do so using standard hosts, end-points, and application software.
In standard or RMS servers, the PEX9716 device on the PCIE-7210-1 is configured in fabric
mode. The Skylake-H CPU on the PCIE-7210-1 can communicate to the Host CPU via virtual
NIC (vNIC) functionality provided by PEX9716 ports (configured as host ports) and also
through 1 G NIC interface accomplished by I210.
The Intel Quark subsystem acts as the management processor for configuring PEX9716 and
also facilitating communication between the devices connected to PEX9716.
In MaxCore, PEX9716 is configured in Base mode. The communication between Skylake-H CPU
and Host CPU is accomplished by using the Virtual functions provided by the MaxCore
platform.
In MaxCore, Quark subsection will not be used and Skylake-H will act as the root complex for
PEX9716.
