Reflection Measurements
Introduction
This part of the Agilent 8510 net w ork analyzer system man ual explains ho w to measure:
Reection return loss
SWR
S-parameter
Imp edance
Admittance
These example measuremen ts are applicable to t ypical one-p ort or t w o-p ort devices.
T o make reection measuremen ts on m ultip ort devices, all p orts except the test p ort are
assumed to b e terminated with Z

Reflection T est Setups
One-P ort Devices
T o measure 1-p ort devices, connect the appropriate adapter (if necessary) at p ort 1, p erform
the appropriate measuremen t calibration, then connect the device under test.
Tw o-P ort Devices
When measuring reection of a t w o-p ort device, the device output p ort m ust b e terminated in
Z

. This is accomplished either b y actually terminating the device output with Z
0
, or b y using
2-p ort error correction to comp ensate the measuremen t for the actual terminating imp edance.
Reflection Measurement Calibration Choices
The follo wing t yp es of calibration are applicable to reection measuremen ts:
Resp onse
Resp onse and Isolation
1-P ort calibration
One-P ath 2-P ort calibration
Response and Response-and-Isolation Calibrations
A Short Circuit or a Shielded Op en Circuit is used as the standard to c haracterize frequency
resp onse errors, and a Load is used to c haracterize directivit y errors.
1-P ort Calibration
Use this for fully error-corrected reection measuremen ts for one-p ort devices. A Load, a
Short Circuit, and a Shielded Op en Circuit are used as the standards.
