Dynamic Range Considerations
As stated earlier, after F actory Preset, the source p o w er lev el is appropriate for most
measuremen ts on passive devices and for range without o v erload or excessiv e measuremen t
uncertain t y . The maximum signal that can b e applied to p ort 1 or p ort 2 of the test set
without damage is ab out +20 dBm. F or measuremen ts on passive devices, the inciden t signal
lev el should b e as high as the test device c haracteristics p ermit without exceeding 010 dBm
in to an y of the rst frequency con v ersion stages. F or gain measuremen ts, set the inciden t
signal lev el to a v alue at whic h the exp ected test device output do es not exceed 010 dBm in to
an y of the rst frequency con v erters.
Figure 4-26 sho ws these dynamic range considerations. Example 1 sho ws lev els at calibration
for a passive device with b oth reference (R) and test (T) inputs near 010 dBm. When
calibrated at these lev els, the maximum dynamic range is a v ailable for insertion loss
measuremen ts.
