ADOBE INDESIGN CS PAGEMAKER EDITION
User Guide Supplement
Colors, tints, and gradients
InDesign offers fine control over colors in your
document and provides additional features, such
as mixed-ink colors and gradients, that let you use
color in new ways.
Working with colors and swatches
InDesign has a Swatches palette that is similar to
the Colors palette in PageMaker. The Color palette
in InDesign is for mixing colors. Colors you mix
can be added to the Swatches palette for future use
or applied directly to an object.

Creating gradients
The Gradient palette lets you create gradients
(also known as fountains, blends, or vignettes)
that combine one or more colors in your
document. Gradients you create can be saved as
swatches in the Swatches palette or applied to an
object directly.

You can also import gradients created with Adobe
Illustrator and edit them directly in InDesign.
Applying colors and fills
Applying colors and fills in InDesign is similar to
applying them in PageMaker. In InDesign, you
select an object, specify whether you want to fill or
stroke the object, and then click a color or fill in
the Swatches palette or the Color palette. (See
“Working with colors and swatches” on page 37.)
Fill/Stroke proxies in the toolbox, Swatches
palette, and Color palette replace the Fill, Stroke,
and Fill and Stroke commands in PageMaker.
