Story editor
To change how text is displayed in the
story editor, choose Preferences > Story Editor
Display.
Color management
To select device profiles or set
up color management, choose Edit > Color
Settings.
Layout adjustment
To specify preferences for
automatic layout adjustment, choose Layout >
Layout Adjustment.
Trapping
To specify preferences for trapping, use
the Trap Presets palette (Window > Trap Presets).
For more information about specific
preferences and settings, see InDesign Help.
A few preference options in PageMaker do not
appear in InDesign:
•
InDesign does not have a preference option to
save faster or smaller. To save with the smallest
file size, use the Save As command. To save
faster, use the Save command.

InDesign does not have an Online Preferences
dialog box. You can drag objects from a Web
browser directly to an InDesign document,
without specifying a proxy. You can also create a
hyperlink to a URL without having to change
preference settings.
You can restore the InDesign application’s
preferences and defaults at any time. (For
details, see InDesign Help.)
Selecting objects
In PageMaker, you select objects using the pointer
tool, and text using the Text tool. InDesign
includes a Selection tool for selecting an object’s
frame or bounding box, and a Direct Selection
tool for selecting the contents of a frame or
individual points on a path. These tools are nearly
identical to tools found in Adobe Illustrator. (See
“Understanding frames” on page 23.)

You can select text with the Type tool or by
double-clicking on a text frame with the Selection
tool or Direct Selection tool. In addition,
InDesign includes several tools that make it easier
to identify and select nested objects.
