Smart Objects

DUA1850-0AAA05

Smart Objects

Included in the MSH hub features are ‘smart objects’. These are not

counters, but are derived by calculation from counters and timers. The

‘smart objects’ are Bandwidth Used and Errors/Frame. By default, the

rolling average is determined over a period of one hour, with the object

updated every 15 minutes. In this way, any peaks (bursts) are evened

out. Using an SNMP manager, you may change the time periods.

Bandwidth Used:

(synonym: Load)

The maximum number of frames that a network can carry is

determined by the timing parameters of the protocol. Counting the

frames over a fixed time enables the percentage of the maximum to be

calculated. You will see Bandwidth Used expressed as this percentage.

‘%Load’ is presented at the Display Panel as a bar chart which is

autoranging in one of three ranges.

Errors/Frame:

This is the result of dividing the number of errors by the number of

frames. It is expressed in errors per 10000 frames. Errors/Frame is a

indicator of the health of your network. If the value rises above its usual

low level, you should look for the source of the errors. This may be:-

■

A loose connection.

■

A badly-configured workstation.

Default RMON alarms already exist on these smart objects. They may be

deleted or altered using a network manager.
