About Repeaters and Modules
The MSH system is designed to give you the control over how the
chassis is configured. You may construct a number of services with
different media and protocols. Three separate Ethernet backplane
buses are provided. They allow you to connect modules together to
give more ports on a larger Ethernet repeater. This is an example of a
service. Individual modules may be isolated from the Ethernet buses,
forming repeaters in their own right. These repeaters can be managed
by the management module.
These three buses have the same properties. By default backplane
bus 1 has an Ethernet connection to the management module. You
may change the connection to either of the other two Ethernet buses.
This has an important implication for ECS Modules forming isolated
repeaters or compound repeaters on the Ethernet buses to which the
management module is not connected. They do not provide a full set
of statistics. Only information on Collisions and Autopartitions is
available from them.
A repeater service can be either a group of modules connected to an
Ethernet backplane bus or an isolated repeater module.
A repeater module may be isolated or part of a repeater service.
Resilient Links
Resilient Links are only available on twisted pair and fiber optic media,
because the link test pulse or the idle signal is used to decide whether
the link is broken and the standby link should be activated. There is no
such link signal over coaxial media.
If you have not come across resilience in the networking field before,
you will find the following explanation helps.
When a link is broken, all communication between devices on each
side of the link is lost. It could be very inconvenient for a manager
physically to reinstate the network immediately. Important traffic
