Licensing Overview
License-activation key numbers are provided with the EFW software. The first time you log
in to the system, you must enter these keys to enable all of the EFW functionality. Each
activation key number represents a number of licenses for an entity type, such as three
Policy Servers or 10 server NICs. You may purchase additional licenses as needed.
The number of licenses you have purchased for Policy Servers determines how many Policy
Servers you may install in your EFW domain. The number of licenses you have purchased
for each supported device type determines the number of each device type you may have
in your EFW domain. Licensing enters into system operations as follows:
■
Licenses for the Policy Server
—A single Policy Server license is required to gain
access to all Management Console functions when connected to a newly installed
Policy Server in a new EFW domain. Additional Policy Server licenses are required to
add new Policy Servers to an existing domain.
■
Licenses for EFW devices
—EFW device licenses (one license per device for desktop
NICs or server NICs) are required for EFW devices to be registered in the Policy Server
database. Devices can be registered manually, or they can be registered automatically
in the database upon first contact with a Policy Server if you are using the network
installation method. You will need enough device licenses to cover the total number of
devices registered by both methods. If more devices attempt to automatically register
than are allowed by your available licenses, you are notified of this attempt the next
time you log in to the Management Console. The system also audits this event. The
device continues to attempt registration until it is successful.
NOTE:
If this is your first login to this EFW domain, you must set up licensing for
your Policy Servers and EFW devices and create a recovery diskette as described in
“Creating a Recovery Diskette” on page 29.
NOTE:
Initial login to a Policy Server when you are running the Management
Console separately on Windows 98 may take a few seconds, due to the setup of
the encryption protecting the link to the Policy Server.
NOTE:
To exit the Management Console, select
Exit
in the Main menu.
