Uninstalling the Policy Server and Management Console
To uninstall the Policy Server and Management Console, follow the steps below.
1
(Optional) Close the Management Console program.
2
(Optional) Stop the EFW Policy Server service using the Windows Services interface
(
Start
->
Settings
->
Control Panel
->
Services
).
3
Remove the EFW software using the Windows Add/Remove program (
Start
->
Settings
->
Control Panel
->
Add/Remove Programs
).
Starting and Stopping System Components
After you have installed the EFW software, you can start the Policy Servers, start the
Management Console, and connect to a Policy Server. The Policy Server is started
automatically whenever you reboot your machine. You can start or stop the components
as follows:
1
From the Start menu, select
Settings
->
Control Panel
->
Services
.
2
Select
3Com Embedded Firewall Policy Server
, and click
Start
or
Stop
.
3
Click
Close
to exit this window.
4
If you are starting this Policy Server for the first time, refer to “Joining a New Policy
Server to a Domain” on page 25.
Thereafter, each time you start the Policy Server, a Startup window appears, displaying
the status of the various Policy Server components. When “Policy Server Initialized”
appears at the bottom of the window, the Policy Server is fully operational. To close
this window, click the X in the upper right corner of the window. (This window is
informational only and may be left open or closed at any time without affecting the
Policy Server.)
NOTE:
To ensure that all files are removed, answer
Yes
to any file-removal prompts
that appear.
NOTE:
If you have multiple Policy Servers controlling multiple EFW NICs and they
go offline (for example, if there is a power outage), you need to start the Policy
Servers individually, and wait until the Policy Server Startup window displays a
status of “Policy Server Initialized” before starting additional Policy Servers.
Starting more than one Policy Server at the same time may cause outdated data
to be replicated.
NOTE:
You cannot manually start or stop a Policy Server unless you have logged in
as a Windows administrator. However, if the computer is rebooted, the Policy
Server starts automatically. Therefore, if a non-administrator logs on to the system,
the Policy Server is already started, even though the user may not be a Windows
administrator.
term
CAUTION:
If your system is running on Windows 2000 Professional, the
Management Console or Policy Server may terminate unexpectedly because some
Windows 2000 Professional systems cause programs that use 3D graphics to
interact with the graphics card in a way that terminates Java programs. If this
termination happens, go to the
Start
menu and select
Settings
->
Control Panels
-
>
Display
. In the Display window, click on the
Settings
tab and then click
Advanced
. In the Advanced window, click on the
Troubleshooting
tab and move
the slide bar to the middle setting.
