3.3 Routine maintenance
The 2998 PDA detector requires minimal routine maintenance.
To achieve optimal performance, follow these steps:
• Replace solvent-reservoir filters in your HPLC system regularly.
• Filter and degas solvents, to prolong column life, reduce pressure fluctuations, and
decrease baseline noise.
• Flush buffered mobile phases out of the detector with HPLC-grade water followed by a 5 to
10% methanol solution each time the detector is shut down. Doing so prevents these
problems:
•
Blockages in the solvent lines and flow cell
• Damage to the detector components
• Microbial growth
3.4 Maintaining the flow cell
The flow cell of the 2998 PDA detector requires maintenance when these events occur:
• The reference spectrum changes.
• The cell fluid leaks out of the drain tube.
• The detector cannot initialize but the lamp is serviceable.
• The detector causes high backpressure.
Warning:
To avoid electric shock,
• do not open the detector cover; the detector does not contain user-serviceable
components.
• power-off and unplug the detector before performing any maintenance on the
instrument.
Notice:
To avoid damaging electrical parts, do not disconnect an electrical assembly from
an instrument or device that remains connected to the ac power supply. To completely
interrupt power to the detector, set its power switch to “off”. Then disconnect and unplug the
power cord from the unit’s rear panel or from the wall outlet. After disconnecting power, wait
for 10 seconds before attempting to disconnect an assembly.
