Ordinary and extraordinary maintanance
7.3.1. Cleaning the screw
The procedure of cleaning the screw may be necessary when the extruder is clogged and regular maintenance
procedures are not effective. Before cleaning the screw try the procedure described in par 7.2.5 “Nozzle”.
The screw cleaning procedure is an extraordinary maintenance operation, therefore it is advisable to understand
what is the cause of the problem that requires its use.
Some examples of situations that may require screw cleaning are:
•
debris or foreign matter in the pellet loaded inside the extruder
•
material not compatible with the extruder (for example with aggregates that prevent extrusion)
•
incorrect process settings and temperatures
•
extruder failure
To carry out the procedure, carefully follow the instructions below:
1. Turn off the machine
2. Unscrew the three screws on the pellet hopper (fig 7.3.1 a-b) with a 2.5 mm Allen key
3. Remove the pellet loading element gently, using a container to collect the falling material (fig 7.3.1 c)
4. Remove the residual material in the extruder manually or with the help of a vacuum cleaner (fig 7.3.1 d)
5. Unscrew the two screws securing the upper gear guard with a 2.5 mm Allen key (fig 7.3.1 e)
6. Remove the top gear guard (fig 7.3.1 f)
