Appendix E: Glossary
136
Thermocouple
A temperature sensor created by joining
two dissimilar metals. The junction
produces a small voltage as a function
of the temperature.
Throughput Rate
The data, measured in bytes/s, for a
given continuous operation.
Transducer
A device that responds to a physical
stimulus (heat, light, sound, pressure,
motion, flow, and so on), and
produces a corresponding electrical
signal.
Transfer Rate
The rate, measured in bytes/s, at which
data is moved from source to
destination after software initialization
and set up operations; the maximum
rate at which the hardware can
operate.
U
Unipolar
A signal range that is always positive
(for example, 0 to +10 V).
Z
Zero-Overhead Looping
The ability of a high-performance
processor to repeat instructions without
requiring time to branch to the
beginning of the instructions.
Zero-Wait-State Memory
Memory fast enough that the processor
does not have to wait during any reads
and writes to the memory.
