If there is not enough suction, the pump is not pulling adequately. Inspect for
possible air leaks. These may be found in the gasket, the discharge valve or
the seal.
When the pump is primed, open the suction line and read the vacuum gauge
with the pump operating at normal speed then shut off the pump. When the
pump is off, the reading on the vacuum gauge should lower rapidly to static
suction lift then quickly stabilize. Verify that the gauge connection is properly
sealed before inspecting the pump vacuum gauge to determine the location
of any leaks.
D. STOPPING
Severe tremors that jolt the pump and piping can severely impair or damage
the equipment when fluids being pumped are suddenly stopped. To avoid
costly repairs or replacement of the equipment, slowly shut all the connecting
valves.
When using an engine to drive the pumps, slow the throttle speed gradually
then permit the engine to idle for a few minutes before completing the
shutdown.
IN HIGH DISCHARGE HEAD APPLICATIONS THE DISCHARGE THROTTLING VALVE
MUST BE GRADUALLY CLOSED BEFORE THE PUMP IS STOPPED.
Once the pump is stopped, either disconnect or block the power source to be
sure the pump will stay dormant during inspection, maintenance or repair.
DO NOT OPERATE PUMP WITH BOTH SUCTION AND DISCHARGE VALVES CLOSED
OR WITH SUCTION OR DISCHARGE BLOCKED BY CLOGGING – THIS COULD CAUSE
DAMAGE AND IS DANGEROUS. THESE PUMPS ARE TO BE USED FOR LIQUID
SERVICE ONLY. EXCESSIVE PRESSURE CAN CAUSE MALFUNCTION LEADING TO
INJURY.
1. Preserving the Pump in Cold Weather
a. Protect the pump from freezing in temperatures under 32°F (0°C) by
completely draining it and using a hose to flush out remaining solids.
