immediately. Once it has cooled sufficiently, the pump may be serviced and
refilled with cool liquid.
BEFORE SERVICING, ALLOW SUFFICIENT TIME FOR AN OVERHEATED PUMP TO
COMPLETELY COOL. ONCE THE PUMP HAS COMPLETELY COOLED, DRAIN THE
LIQUID FROM THE PUMP BY REMOVING THE CASING DRAIN PLUG. WHEN
REMOVING THE DRAIN PLUG, USE CAUTION. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT IN
INJURY. PLATES, COVERS, GAUGES, OR FITTINGS MUST NOT BE REMOVED FROM
AN OVERHEATED PUMP. LIQUIDS IN THE PUMP CAN REACH BOILING
TEMPERATURES AND VAPOR PRESSURE INSIDE THE PUMP CAN CAUSE PARTS TO
BE EXPELLED VIOLENTLY.
WSP™ Self-primer pump is protected by a pressure relief valve that opens if
the pressure within the pump casing reaches a critical point. This provides a
measure of safety against possible rupture or explosion from excessive heat.
You must stop the pump immediately and allow it to cool before servicing if
the liquid temperature reaches dangerous levels.
Use great caution when
nearing any overheated pump.
Weir Specialty Pumps advises replacing
the pressure relief valve assembly during each maintenance check or any
time the pump casing overheats and triggers the valve to release pressure.
The pressure relief valve may
only
be replaced with an original
manufacturer’s pressure relief valve provided by Weir Specialty Pumps. Do
not
use a substitute.
5. Strainer Check
When a suction strainer is included with the pump, or the user has installed a
strainer, inspect and clean the strainer on a regular basis. Also, if the rate of
the pump flow slows significantly, and if a vacuum suction gauge has been
installed, check the strainer for clogging. Regularly watch and record the
readings to determine when there is clogging in the strainer.
Never attempt to remove clogging in the strainer by forcing steam pressure or
air into either the pump casing or the attached piping. Such an attempt may
cause damage to the pump and piping and/or result in injury to the operator.
Should pump performance require back-flushing, do not allow the pressure of
the liquid to exceed 50% of the highest operating pressure allowed in the
pump performance curve.
6. Checking the Pump Vacuum
To safely install a vacuum gauge in the system, first disconnect the pump.
Use pipe dope on the threads of a vacuum gauge when installing, and block
the suction line before starting the pump. The pump should create a
minimum vacuum of 20-inches (508 mm) of mercury when fully operational.
