Backup System Controller Overview
HeartMate III patients receive two System Controllers: one to actively use (running), and a
reserve (backup) in case the running System Controller experiences a failure.
Every HeartMate III patient receives a backup System Controller, which is identical to the running
System Controller. If a failure occurs on the running System Controller, it may need to be
replaced with the backup System Controller. For this reason, and in case of an emergency, the
backup System Controller must remain with the patient at all times (
Figure 2.29 ).
