A
Access
(v.) To read, write, or update information on a storage medium, such as
magnetic media. (n.) The operation of reading, writing, or updating stored
information.
Access Time
The interval between the time a request for data is made by the
system and the time the data is available from the tape drive.
Advanced PRML
Advanced Partial Response Maximum Likelihood. The
advanced PRML channel technology provides high-encoding efficiency recording
densities for greater capacity and performance.
Allocation
The process of assigning particular areas of the media to particular
data or instructions.
Archiving
The removal or copying of data from the computer system onto
secondary storage media that is safely stored away.
ASIC
Application Specific Integrated Circuit.
ASTM
American Society for Testing and Materials.

Backup
A copy of a file, directory, or volume on a separate storage device from
the original, for the purpose of retrieval in case the original is accidentally erased,
damaged, or destroyed.
Bad Data Block
A block that cannot reliably hold data because of a media flaw or
damaged format markings.
