There is no need to calculate bolt
or screw length; the calibrated
drill bit provides a direct
measurement. However, since
drill bit position directly represents
locking bolt or locking screw
position in bone, the locking bolt
or locking screw will be too long
if the drill bit is overinserted, or if
the drill sleeve is not pressed
down to the lateral cortex.
To minimize measuring errors,
use the ‘pause and consider’
method: Temporarily stop the
drill when the bit hits the far
cortex. Press the drill sleeve to
the lateral cortex, continue
drilling until the bit penetrates
the far cortex, and read the
direct locking bolt or locking
screw length at the back of
the drill sleeve.
