IP Type of Service represents an 8-bit field in the IP header that allows the network to
prioritize IP traffic based on the value of this field. The recommended setting is 188
decimal (10111100 binary), based on each of the six fields described below.
The 8-bits are ordered 0–7 and are composed of the following parts:

Precedence (bits 0,1,2). Valid values include the following:
7 - 111 Network Control
6 - 110 Internetwork Control
5 - 101 CRITIC/ECP
4 - 100 Flash Override
3 - 011 Flash
2 - 010 Immediate
1 - 001 Priority
0 - 000 Routine
For realtime voice communications the maximum application setting of 101 (5
decimal) is recommended. Levels 6 and 7 are normally reserved for network
equipment only.

Delay (bit 3). Valid values are: 0 (normal delay) and 1 (low delay). Recommended
setting is 1.
■
Throughput (bit 4). Valid values are 0 (normal throughput) and 1 (high throughput).
Recommended setting is 1.
■
Reliability (bit 5). Valid values are 0 (normal reliability) and 1 (high reliability).
Recommended setting is 1.
■
Reserved (bits 6 and 7). These bits must be set to 0.
