Fuselage Continued
39.
Fit formers F35, F36, and F37 to the slots immediately below formers F8, F9, and F10.
Double check that parts have proper
FORWARD
orientation then tack glue within assembly.
40.
Fit and bond lower fuselage sides F38 and F39 to formers F30, F31, F32, F33, F34, and
crutch side rails F2.
Note: Work one side (F38 or F39) at a time to properly fit the tabs of
formers and dovetails in crutch to notches and dovetail within fuselage sides. Position
fuselage flat on your work table with the side to be bonded down, once again, inspect the
part fit, then bond.
41.
Position doublers F40 and F41 on the inside face of each fuselage side to check
orientation. DO NOT BOND.
42.
Note that the doublers will extend below the fuselage sides slightly. Remove doublers, coat
mating surfaces with thick CA or a slow setting aliphatic wood glue (carpenters glue) and
replace. Press firmly into place and wipe up any glue that oozes out. Wick thin CA around
the edges of the doubler to bond it to the fuselage crutch and former F30.
43.
Follow the procedures in step 42 to fit and bond doublers F42 and F43 to the inside face of
doublers F40 and F41.
Note that doubler F42 and F43 will stand proud of doublers F40 and F41 slightly.
44.
Fit the hatch doubler F44 against the inside face of one fuselage side between formers F30
and F34, slotting it into formers F31 and F32. Bond the doubler to each former, and wick
thin CA around the edges of the doubler to bond it to the fuselage side.
Note: A slow
setting aliphatic wood glue (carpenters glue) is very appropriate for this step. If you are
good with CA then fire away with the instant set glue. If you’d like more time to line your
parts up and avoid hard to sand glue “boogars” from forming along the edge of your hatch
surface then reach for some good old fashioned carpenters or white glue.
45.
Repeat the procedure in step 45 to install the other hatch doubler F45 to the inside face of
the opposite fuselage side.
