Air Tool Safety

Dangerous environment

•  Always ensure that there is adequate clear space around the work area
•  Be aware that air hoses can present a trip hazard, always lay hoses in

way that minimises hazards

Protect yourself from vibration

•  Hand held air tools may produce vibration. Vibration can cause disease
•  Gloves to keep the operator warm may help to maintain good blood

circulation in the fingers. Hand held tools should not be used for long
periods without a break

Maintain your air tool

•  Ensure that you keep air tools clean and lubricated. Lubrication is

essential to prevent corrosion of internal parts, which could lead to
machine failure

Always disconnect

•  Always ensure the air tool has fully stopped functioning before putting

it down

•  Disconnect any air tool from the air supply before performing any

servicing, or changing any blades, discs, or other attachments

•  Ensure that any blades, discs, or attachments, are correctly fitted before

reconnecting to air supply

•  Always make sure that your air tool is switched OFF before connecting

to air supply

•  Be aware that air tools may hold residual pressure after use. Always

bleed air pressure from the tool after shutting off air supply

Use the correct air hose

•  Use lightweight hoses from the tool to the wall, or compressor coupling
•  Most air tools should be fitted with a coil hose, only use a straight hose

with spray guns

•  When spraying, ensure that the gun is connected to a clean, filtered,

air supply

Protect your eyes

•  Always wear safety goggles or safety glasses

Protect your hearing

•  Always wear ear protection

Do not abuse the machine

•  Do not overload the machine. Allowing the machine to work at its

optimum speed prolongs life and is more efficient

•  Do not increase air pressure above the recommended level, excessive

pressure leads to wear of moving parts and possible failure. It can also
cause the machine casing to split

•  Do not attempt to modify air tools. Any attempt to modify your tool will

invalidate its warranty and could result in serious injury to you or those
around you

Use of spray guns

•  Do not aim a spray gun at people or animals
•  When spraying keep away from heat and naked flames
•  Always wear appropriate protective equipment including, but not
limited to overalls, gloves, facemask etc.
•  It is the user’s responsibility to ensure that any other persons in the
vicinity of the work area are also equipped with the appropriate
  protective equipment

Dangerous environment

•  Do not use power tools in damp or wet conditions, or expose them to

rain. Provide adequate surrounding work space and keep the area well
lit. Do not use power tools where there is a risk of explosion or fire from
combustible material, flammable liquids, flammable gases, or dust of
an explosive nature. When using power tools, avoid contact with any
earthed items such as pipes, radiators, cookers, refrigerators, metal
baths and taps

•  Hand-held power tools may produce vibration. Vibration can cause

disease. Gloves may help to maintain good blood circulation in the
fingers. Hand-held tools should not be used for long periods without
a break

Maintain your power tool

•  Ensure all ventilation holes are kept clear at all times, otherwise

overheating and fire may occur

Always disconnect

•  Before changing fittings or accessories, always disconnect the tool from

the power source

Switch off before connecting

•  Ensure the power tool is switched off before connecting to the power

source. If the power tool stops unexpectedly, turn the power switch to
OFF

Do not abuse the power cable

•  Be sure the cable / extension cable is in good condition. Always have

a damaged cable / extension cable replaced at an authorised service
centre before using. Never pull the cable to disconnect it from the power
socket. Never carry the tool by its cable. Keep the cable away from
damp, heat, oil, solvents, and sharp edges

Do not modify the power tool

•  Do not modify the power tool in any way as this could result in serious

injury and may invalidate its guarantee

Do not leave the tool running unattended
