Tape cartridges
Tape cartridges are high-capacity data storage media. The system supports
quarter-inch, 4 mm and 8 mm cartridges.
Quarter-inch cartridges are available with capacities of 155 MB and 525 MB. The
4 mm cartridges are available with a net capacity of 2 or 4 GB (90 m or 120 m). The
8 mm cartridges are availabe with a net capacity of 5, 7 or 20 GB (112 m, 160 m or
170 m). The 5 and 7 Gbyte cartridges can be written in downward-compatible mode,
down to 2.3 Gbyte mode.
Cartridges with a capacity of 7 Gbytes (160 m) can only be used in an
8 mm drive of the type XL. In the 8 mm, 20/40 Gbyte (MC75) drive, you
may only use cartridges with a capacity of 20 Gbytes (170 m). If in doubt,
please contact your local Siemens Nixdorf office.
To obtain optimum recording quality you are advised to use the cartridges available
from you local Siemens Nixdorf office, as these provide the best match with the
characteristics of the drive.
Only use SNI-approved cartridges. Other cartridges may damage the
drive heads.
The prescribed cartridge types for the 8 mm drive are Exatape

The service life of a tape cartridge depends on how often the tape is read and written
and how the cartridge is handled.
●
Quarter-inch cartridges can be read about 260 times or read and written 130
times.
●
4 mm and 8 mm cartridges can be read about 500 times or read and written
250 times.
After this number of operations a cartridge is worn out and should no longer be used.
