The
control box
is the “brain” of the machine and contains a control board, motor drivers, and other
electronic components that allow the tool to move with precision, accuracy, and power. It connects to
the PC through a single USB cable.
The
variable frequency device (VFD)
is used on machines that contain a spindle only (not a router).
It controls speed and power for the spindle. The control box provides the VFD with on/off signals, but
speed is controlled through an RPM controller unit, which connects to the PC through a separate USB
cable.
In most cases, the
X-, Y-, and Z-axes
will be referred to in respect to the machine. Another frequent-
ly-used term is the
XY home position
, as indicated here.
