5.5.2. Check the fuel system
First check if there is enough fuel in the fuel tank. Remove the fuel screen and look into the
tank if there are foreign substances, rust or in environment below 0°C little clouds of ice crys-
tals. In case of a polluted tank remove the fuel line from the carburetor and drain the fuel in
a suitable can.
The fuel screen is placed under the fuel cap. Remove the
screen and check if it is in good condition. Change if nec-
essary. You can wash this screen in solvent. To check the
fuel system proceed the following steps:
• Demount the fuel tank.
• Close the fuel valve and remove the fuel line from the
carburetor.
• Check if fuel comes out of the fuel line when you open
the fuel valve. In case there is no fuel coming out, the
fuel filter has to be cleaned.
To clean the fuel filter proceed the following steps:
• Demount the fuel tank.
• Drain (empty) the fuel tank.
• Unscrew the fuel valve from the tank.
• Wash the filter element of the valve in solvent.
• Screw the valve back in the tank and mount the fuel
tank.
5.5.3. Clean air filter
Sometimes the air filter is polluted with not visibly small particles. Signals for a polluted
air filter are blue or dark grey exhaust gases coming out of the muffler. Service air filter
all 150 hours (in sandy environment more often) to prevent engine malfunction. Never
run the engine without air filter. Severe engine damage will occur.
• Open the 2 screws (1) of the air filter cover and remove
the cover. Give attention that you do not damage the
two holding guides on the right side.
• Remove the air filter.
• Check the filter element to be sure it is in good condi
-
tion. Replace damaged filters.
• Wash filter element in solution of mild detergent and
warm water. Rinse thoroughly in clean water. Allow ele-
ment to dry thoroughly.
• Drop some engine oil on the element and squeeze out
excess oil. Do not wring the filter element!
• Reinstall the air filter and the cover.
5.5.4. Muffler and exhaust gases
Backfire in the exhaust system could be result of loose screws on the exhaust manifold. Check
the tightness of the manifold screws.
The color of the exhaust gases could be also a good indicator of the engine state:
White grey exhaust Water in the fuel
Drain the fuel tank.
Blue exhaust
Engine burns oil
Check the correct fuel mixture. It has to be a
ratio of 1:50
Dark grey exhaust
Engine overloaded
Check the air filter element.
Reduce the load.
