Notes about Compatibility Characters
• Characters in Idents come from an intersection list of the first 256 characters from Unicode and the allowable
characters in XML 1.1.
• Document authors are encouraged to avoid “compatibility characters”, as defined in Unicode.
• The characters defined in the following ranges are also discouraged. They are either control characters or
permanently undefined Unicode characters.

• XML 1.1 explicitly excludes the following characters:
[0x01-0x08], [0x0b-0x0c], [0x0E-0x1F], [0x7f-0x84], [0x86-0x9f]
Characters Available
Table 11.1 lists the supported characters. Unsupported characters are set in grey. Generally, if an unsupported
character is detected, it will be replaced with the ‘space’ character 0x20.
