MAINTENANCE
CHECKING WHEEL BOLTS AND BEARINGS
Check tightness of all wheel bolts and wheel bearings during the first week of operation, and periodically after
that.
Torque wheel bolts:
220 lb./ft.
To adjust the wheel bearing, remove center hubcap and bearing lock nuts. Raise the wheel and turn it. Tighten
nut until there is a slight but noticeable drag on the bearing. Back off nut until nut hub turns smoothly with slight
drag. Lock bearing lock nuts. Replace hubcap.
Note:
When placing the hub spindle, care must be exercised to avoid damaging the seal.
REPACK WHEEL HUB BEARING ANNUALLY
Wheel hub bearings should be repacked once a year with wheel bearing grease. Replace the grease seals if
necessary.
Remove wheel hubs.
Place bearings, seals, caps, washers, and nuts in clean container and clean with kerosene or other
solvents.
Inspect the bearings and seals. If they are not in satisfactory condition, replace them with new parts
available from your Rome dealer.
Clean inside of hubs.
Pack the bearing cones and seals with No. 2 multi-purpose lithium grease or equivalent.
Make sure no foreign material is allowed to get into lubricant or bearing.
Re-install the hub and bearings. Refer to the illustration on the following page for proper assembly.
Be sure to:
1. Press the cups against the shoulders in the hub.
2. Press the bearing cones into the bearing cup in the hub.
3. Press the oil seal very lightly against the shoulders in the hub.
4. Lubricate the seal lips with grease before installing the hub onto the spindle.
5. Install the hub onto the spindle.
6. Install washer and bearing lock nuts and set bearing end play.
7. Pack cover plate with grease and install.
8. See information above for proper wheel hub bearing adjustment instructions.
