Building and Operating Instructions - ASW 28 GRP 3m

No. 2585

Fig. 1

-  Glue together the formers which support the receiver bat-

tery as shown in the illustration.

Fig. 2

-  This assembly can now be glued in the fuselage. If you

intend to install an aero-tow release mechanism, the unit
must be installed first. Use Ropoxi thickened with micro-
balloons for this joint.

Fig. 3

-  Prepare the formers to accept the rudder and retract ser-

vos (2 x S3150).

Fig. 4

-  The completed rudder servo assembly can now be glued

to the right-hand side of the fuselage and the retract unit
former.

Fig. 5

- Install the rudder servo (S3150). Glue the outer snake

sleeve for the rudder to the slot in the former. Cut the outer
sleeve and the pushrod to length. Screw the M2 locknut
and clevis onto the threaded coupler, and glue it to the
inner tube and steel rod of the snake.

Fig. 6

-  Glue the retract servo assembly (as shown in Step 4) to the

left-hand side of the fuselage and the retract unit former.

Fig. 7

-  The retract unit pushrod can now be prepared: open up

the hole in the ball-link to 2 mm, and glue it to the pushrod.
Screw the M2 locknut and clevis on the pushrod.

Fig. 8

- Install the retract servo (S3150). Adjust the servo end-

points from the transmitter, and ensure that the retract
mechanism locks reliably.

Fig. 9

-  Cut the slot for the elevator pushrod in the top of the fin,

as shown in the photograph: drill pilot-holes first, then file
to final shape and size.

Fig. 10

-  Cut the rudder snake outer sleeve to length, ensuring that

the rudder has full freedom of movement.

Fig. 11

-  Glue the formers in place for the elevator servo (S3150).

Fig. 12

-  Before gluing the tail post in place (at a point about 3 mm

from the fin trailing edge), check the size of the slot in the fin
(see Stage 9); the rudder pushrod must move freely. Check
that there are no resin residues in the threaded holes for the
tailplane retaining screws. Tack the tail post in place with a
few drops of cyano-acrylate. When you are satisfied, glue it
in place permanently using Ropoxi.

Fig. 13

-  Install the elevator servo (S3150) in this assembly. Set the

servo to neutral from the transmitter, and shorten the servo
output arm to the point where it no longer fouls the inside
of the fin.

Fig. 14

-  The next step is to prepare the elevator linkage: screw

the ball-link onto the threaded end of the pushrod. Glue or
solder the threaded coupler to the plain end (servo end),
then screw the M2 locknut and clevis on the coupler.

Fig. 15

-  The ball-end bolt is installed in the elevator as shown in the

illustration: drill a 3 mm hole in the elevator at an angle of
15°, and glue the ball-end bolt in it.

Fig. 16

-  Install the prepared elevator pushrod in the fin.

Fig. 17

- Attach the tailplane to the fin using the two M4 nylon

screws. Take care not to over-tighten the screws.

Fig. 18

-  Glue the two hinge lugs (A) in the tail post using Ropoxi

(note that the upper hinge must be shortened by about

7 mm)

. Keep the fuselage nose pointing vertically down,

to avoid glue running into the hinge pivot pins. The rudder
can be removed simply by withdrawing the 2 mm rod (B).

Fig. 19

-  Glue the ball-end bolt in the rudder. Now glue the threaded

coupler to the inner snake tube, and screw the ball-link
on the threaded end. Check from the transmitter that the
rudder is at neutral when the stick is at its centre point.

Fig. 20

-  Cut out the cockpit cradle along the marked line, and trim it

to fit snugly in the fuselage recess. Mark the cut-line with a
black felt-tip pen beforehand, as this makes it much easier
to see.

Fig. 21

-  Once trimmed to fit accurately, the cockpit can be painted

and fitted out with additional detail features.

Fig. 22

-  The cockpit can now be glued to the canopy. The cockpit

can either be screwed to the fuselage or glued to the cano-
py frame using cyano-acrylate.

- There are several alternative methods of installing the

wing-mounted servos.

One option is to install the S3156 servo using the heat-

shrink sleeve method.

-  A piece of heat-shrink sleeve is fitted over the servo and

shrunk round the case. This makes it possible to glue the
servo in the wing without the glue contacting the servo
itself. This method of installation makes it easy to replace
servos if required.

-  The servo lead needs to be extended by about 900 mm. If

you employ a ready-made extension lead, secure the con-
nectors with a heat-shrink sleeve for additional security.
