Relief Valve

StandardforReliefValvesandAutomaticGasShut-Off

DevicesforHotWaterSupplySystems,ANSIZ21.22/

CSA4.4,mustbeinstalledattheHOTwateroutlet

connectionofthewaterheaterduringinstallation.

Localcodesshallgoverntheinstallationofany

reliefvalvesorplaceofpurchaseforavailabilityand

installationinformation.

NOTICES:

•Thefollowingdrawingillustratesapressure-only

reliefvalve.Iflocalcodesrequireacombination

temperatureandpressure-reliefvalve,youmayneed

toinstallanextensionpiecetoensurethatthevalve

probeisnotdirectlyintheflowpathofthewater.

•Apressurereliefvalvesuppliedwiththiswaterheater

mustbeinstalledasshownbelow.

•Manualoperationofreliefvalvesshouldbe

performedatleastonceayear.

•Ifthereliefvalveonthesystemdischarges

periodically,aproblemexists.Turnoffthewater

heater,unplugtheunit,andcallforservice.

Oneendofthereliefvalvedischargelineconnectsto

theHOTwateroutletpipeasshownabove.Theother

endofthepipeshouldberoutedtoasuitabledrainto

eliminatepotentialwaterdamage.

Forsafeoperationofthewaterheater,besurethat:
•Thepressureratingofthereliefvalvemustnot

exceed150psi(1,034kPa)orthemaximumworking

pressureofthewaterheater.(Seetheratingplateon

thewaterheater.)

•TheBTUHratingofthereliefvalvemustequalor

exceedtheBTUHinputofthewaterheater.(Seethe

ratingplateonthewaterheater.)

•Novalveofanytypeshouldbeinstalledbetweenthe

reliefvalveandthewaterheater.

•Dischargefromthereliefvalveshouldbepipedto

asuitabledrain.Pipingusedshouldbeofatype

approvedforthedistributionofhotwater.

•HOTandCOLDwaterlinesshouldbeinsulatedupto

thewaterheater.Seepage51.

•ThedischargelinemustbeNOSMALLERthanthe

outletofthereliefvalve.Thedrainlinemustpitch

downwardtoallowforcompletedrainageoftheline

andthevalve.

•Theendofthedischargelineshouldnotbethreaded

orconcealedandshouldbeprotectedfromfreezing.

Novalveofanytype,restriction,orreducercoupling

shouldbeinstalledinthedischargeline.
