Transmission Cont.
The T-20 is a renowned transmission, and is known for still operating while out of adjustment. It’s best to check T20
adjustment while servicing the Mudd-Ox to ensure it’s in good condition, and does not wear to the point of causing
dangerous driving characteristics.
Signs of Worn Adjustment
• Control levers have more than 5-6” of throw to engage the transmission.
• Control levers do not have even throw, as one side moves further than the other.
• Even when the control levers are firmly pushed, the transmission slips.
• At least one side of the Mudd-Ox does not drive.
Inspection
See
Inspection
under
Bearings
for inspecting steering lever bearings. Located on the bottom of the control levers
are linkages that connect directly to the transmission. Ensure these have no slop at either end, and are firmly con-
nected to all moving parts. The U-channels on the transmission should also be in good condition with all (4) R-pins
in place (E in Figure-7).
Adjustment - Part 1
1. Set the parking brake. See
Accessing the Mudd-Ox
to remove the lower operator seats and front floor board.
2. Locate the (2) U-channels on the front of the transmission. Begin with the right side U-channel.
3. Use one hand to pull the right side control lever
backwards
with moderate pressure. With the other, use a tape
measure to find the distance between the face of the transmission and the rearmost section of the U-channel
(F in Figure-8). Write this number down. It should be approx. 3/4”.
4. Next, push the control lever
forwards
with moderate pressure while measuring at the same location. Write this
number down. It should be approx. 1/2” (Figure-9).
5. At this point you should have (2) measurements:
A. The measurements are correct: This side of the transmission will not need adjusted. Move to step #9.
B. The measurements are not correct: This side of the transmission will need adjusted. Move to step #6.
