In addition to the digital readout of O
2
saturation, the clinician can display a plethysmographic waveform to help
distinguish an artifactual signal from the true signal. If readings are lower than expected or there is artifact in the
pleth wave signal, reposition the sensor.
Ensure that the optical components of the sensor are properly aligned and the nails are free of nail polish.
Ensure that the sensor is positioned on a finger that is free of a blood pressure cuff or any blood flow
obstruction.
Check and reposition reusable sensors a minimum of every 4 hours.
Check and reposition disposable sensors a minimum of every 4 hours. Replace the disposable sensor when it no
longer adheres to the skin.
Certain conditions may result in readings that are unreliable.
Refer to the instructions accompanying the type sensor being used for proper application and/or warnings.
