5-9. Connecting Thermocouples
.
Thermocouple temp sensors are
used to control the amount of
heat being induced into the met-
al. They must be placed under
each heating tool or preheat in-
sulation, in contact with the
workpiece, to prevent damage to
the heating tool.
.
Both thermocouples can be set
as control for the entire heating
process.
.
A control thermocouple must be
located under the coil when
moved to a new position.
.
If multiple air-cooled heating
tools are being used, the user
will need to place a thermocou-
ple temp sensor under each
heating tool connected to the
system.

Weld Joint
Place thermocouple temp sensor in
contact with the metal being heated
by the heating tool.
Place any additional thermocouple
temp sensors on the workpiece to
monitor temperature in accordance
with the procedure, QC require-
ments, and/or code requirements.

Connector Plugs
Connect all thermocouple temp sen-
sor connector plugs to the thermo-
couple receptacle at the end of the
ArcReach Heater extension cable.
.
Thermocouples do not need to
be sequential; they can skip a
slot if needed. For example, con-
necting TC1 and TC3 only.
.
Positioning the heating wrap or
cable right next to the joint will get
the joint up to temperature faster.
After the joint is at temperature,
the wrap or cable and insulation
can be moved further from the
joint while maintaining tempera-
ture for the welding process.
