Remove the piston seal (9) and its backup ring (8) by unscrewing the button head screw
(24) and removing the grooved backup ring.
9.
With the piston seal removed, the components on the piston can now be removed by
sliding them off.
10.
Remove the bearing (12) from the bearing retainer (11). The bearing back-up rings (7)
should always be replaced together. To remove the bearing:
a.
Obtain a pair of needle-nose pliers.
b.
Insert the plier tips into the notches in the bearing retainer.
c.
Apply pressure to the bearing by squeezing the needle-nose pliers until the bearing
cracks.

e.
Clean the bearing cavity.
Cleaning Components
1.
All the components just removed must be thoroughly cleaned.
•
Each component should be rinsed in water or a suitable cleaner.
•
A clean, damp rag should be used to wipe the components clean and to remove
product, debris, and Never-Seez lubricant.
•
Particular care must be taken to thoroughly clean all threaded parts.
•
Any debris on the threads will damage the components during assembly.
•
It is recommended that if compatible, isopropyl alcohol be used. Obtain clean rags
and dampen the rags with the alcohol and again clean all the components just
removed.
•
It is suggested that Q-tips be used for hard-to-reach areas.
•
The components should be wiped clean to a spotless appearance.
•
Once again, the threaded components must be kept clean.
This strict cleaning procedure must be followed each time the piston seal is replaced.
Failure to properly clean the components will result in premature failure of seals, o-rings
and cause damage to machined parts.
2.
Inspect all the components just cleaned. Look for any excessive scratches or wear marks,
particularly inside the bore of the liquid end body (4). If such damage is found, the
components must be replaced. For further assistance, contact the Customer Service
Department at Microfluidics at 1-800-370-5452. Hours are 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM (EST) Monday
through Friday.
Installing the Piston, Seal, Bearing Retainer, Bearings and Backup Rings
The steps in the Removing the Piston, Bearing Retainer, and Bearing must be reversed, essentially,
beginning with installing the isolator bearing with seals (10), retainer bearing (11), backup ring (8)
onto the piston (2) before finally installing the piston seal backup ring (8) and the piston seal (9)
with screw (24).
