When the engine is run in, oil consumption
may reach 0.5% of the fuel consumption
recorded in actual operating circumstanc-
es. A longer distance covered and more ar-
duous operating conditions could lead to
certain vehicles exceeding this value.
Running the vehicle in
It is of decisive importance for the engine
not to be subjected to its full rated load
during the running-in period.
Run the vehicle in gently. Drive at vary-
ing road and engine speeds.
Avoid high engine speeds. Do not drive
any more than ¾ of the maximum road
speed for each gear.
Change gear in good time. Do not shift
down to brake the vehicle.
After a distance of 1,250 miles (2,000 km),
you can gradually bring the vehicle up to
full road and engine speed.

Risk of accident
G
On new vehicles there is the risk that the
wheel nuts could work loose if they are not
tightened. The wheel nuts must be tightened
after driving 30 miles (50 km). Observe the
notes on page 392 and torques on
page 577.
