BILGE ALARM PANEL
Located at the helm station is the Bilge Alarm panel (see Figure 6.21).
At the bottom of the panel are three red warning lights. These lights
represent the high-water float switches in the engine room, machinery space
and the forward sections of the boat respectively, and if any of these float
switches activate, the appropriate red warning light will illuminate. This
warns the operator that water has entered one of these bilge areas in greater
quantities than the pump can handle and the bilge is beginning to flood.
At the same time, the audible HIGH WATER alarm will sound, both at the
helm and at the DC switchboard. This situation requires immediate attention
and must be investigated immediately. During heavy weather, nuisance triggering of the alarm can briefly occur and
for this reason the alarm can be suppressed at the helm station by using the
toggle switch on the panel (see Figure 6.23). It is good practice to ensure
that this switch has not been inadvertently placed in the OFF position.
Also located on the bilge pump panel are two green lights for dusk and
night navigation. The top light will illuminate when the anchor light is on.
The lower green light will illuminate when the navigation lights are ON, and
this will alert the operator when the vessel is under way.
